Saturday Adults 2022/23

Penalty heartbreak for WVFC – weekend round-up

February 14, 2023

The Saturday Adults Team’s superb cup run came to an end at the weekend with a defeat to Higham Town Reserves in the quarter-final. With the game finishing 1-1 after extra-time, a succession of well-taken penalties unfortunately ended in a 6-5 defeat for Jordan Drew’s team. However, despite this set-back, they remain unbeaten in “normal” football this season and can now concentrate on the league they currently lead by six points.

Saturday also saw our Colts in action away to Weldon United Reserves. A 9-1 defeat may not seem like progress, but the home fixture earlier this season was nearly double that, so this team continues to show improvement as it gains experience.

On Sunday it was first vs second in the Veterans league as we welcomed Oundle Town Veterans to Newlands Road for a top-of-the-table six pointer. A win would have seen us close to the gap to just 1 point and two early goals, the second of which someone managed to capture on video, had us thinking that a thrilling end to the season might well be on the cards. However, gradually Oundle turned the screw and, in the end, ran out as deserved winners. (Although we do feel the final 6-2 scoreline perhaps flattered them just a little bit).

Welford Victoria Veterans make it 2-0 early on against Oundle Town

Just the one fixture next weekend with the Saturday Adults travelling to play Woodhouse Imperial Reserves. Next up at the Sportsfield is a double-header on Saturday 4th March, with the Veterans rounding off a bumper Welford weekend at home the next morning.
