A depleted Welford Victoria Veterans side travelled to Wellingborough Exiles looking to get 3 points on the board in what was only their second league game of the season.
After a cagey start Welford took the lead through a great team goal. Passing out from the back and working the ball out wide before Danny Penn got on the end of the cross to make it 1-0. Wellingborough began to grow into the game and got a deserved equaliser on the half hour mark, meaning it was 1-1 going into the break.
A change of formation at half time saw Welford came out strongly, creating numerous chances but just not able to put the ball in the back of the net. As always seems to be the case, this proved costly as against the run of play Wellingborough made it 2-1.
With Welford pushing forward looking for an equaliser Wellingborough broke away and made it 3-1, the goal standing despite vociferous appeals for offside from the Welford defence. Welford remained in the game and Danny Penn got his second of the game with 15 mins to go to set up an exciting finish, but although Welford pushed Wellingborough stood strong.
An unlucky 3-2 defeat which could have easily gone Welford’s way nonetheless represents a dramatic improvement on recent results and gives us confidence as our league programme resumes after what has felt like an endless run of cup matches since our last league game over two months ago.
