Welford Victoria Veterans travelled to Higham Ferrers for the 1st round of the NFTA Veterans Cup in which they had been drawn against Higham Town Veterans, a team that they had recently played against in the league and lost 4-0. Many of the regular players were either away or injured, so Welford did very well to put a 12 man squad together which included many new faces and a couple of players coming out of retirement.
Welford got off to a good start and were competitive for about 20 minutes but Higham Town started to put the pressure on and despite having a number of shots saved managed to put one in the back of the net at around the 25 minute mark. Higham’s second goal was scored from the penalty spot and although Welford had a couple of chances didn’t really give the keeper anything to worry about and Higham Town quickly followed up with a 3rd goal before half-time.
Welford started the 2nd half strongly but once Higham got into their stride they dominated play and scored 2 more goals. Although Welford lost 5-0, they kept their heads up and did play some qualify football at times. The game was played in good spirits, and it was nice to have a beer and a bite to eat with some of the Higham Town players after the game.
