Welford Victoria Sunday Adults travelled away this week to play Middleton United for the second time in just over a month. With just the bare eleven in their travelling party and Brighton Avenue especially cold and wet this had all the makings of a difficult morning.
Welford started the game on the front foot, had chances to take the lead and looked in control for the first 30 minutes. However just before half-time Middleton took the league through a own goal, meaning that for all their good work, Welford trailled at the break.
With the mountain in front them looking increasingly steep given the absence of reinforcements off the bench, Welford were nonetheless upbeat and ready to take the game to Middleton in the second half. The equaliser came quickly, with some great work by Nathan Harris leading to a superb finish by Tom Stupar.
Welford’s determination finally paid off as they took the lead with 15 minutes to go; another great strike by Stupar giving him his second of the game! Welford then weathered a late storm to secure the 3 points and record a second 2-1 win against this opposition – albeit in less dramatic style this time.
Welford move to seventh in the league but are just two points behind 2nd place in this tight division.
