Welford Victoria Veterans welcomed Northampton Phoenix FC to Newlands Road for the return fixture looking to do the double after a narrow win at their place exactly a month before. Despite kicking into the wind, a positive start saw Welford take a fifth minute lead, doubling it to 2-0 less than ten minutes later. A superb strike just before half-time halved the arrears before the first of the game’s two hotly disputed penalties (one for each side, each disputed by the other – of course) saw Phoenix level just after half-time.
With the result now in the balance, this wake-up call saw Welford step up a gear, play some lovely football and score four goals without reply to run out 6-2 winners. This great team performance, despite being without both of our regular centre-backs, means the Veterans have now won two out of their last three and three out of their last five matches. Next up is the return fixture against Wellingborough Exiles.
