With both teams in good form going into this match it promised to be a close encounter and so it proved. Welford started better early in the game but despite putting pressure on couldn’t break down Middleton’s defence and the first half ended goalless.
The second half continued in a similar vein until, ultimately, a towering header from Jay Parker made the breakthrough and put Welford one-nil up. Middleton responded positively, however, and we soon found ourselves level at 1-1.
The winning goal for the home side came with 3 minutes to go when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Tom Stupar. Debutant Tony Cole converted the spot kick meaning Welford remain unbeaten three games into the new season, rising to third in the early table.
