After a 40-minute grand tour across Northamptonshire, we came across a small pitch with small goals on the edge of Grendon for a mid-table game that promised to be a close contest and, ultimately, did not disappoint!
In a tactical change from their usual 4-5-1, Welford lined up in a 4-4-2 formation for this match, but started cautiously with Hackleton having most of the ball in the first 20 minutes. Eventually, though Welford switched on, started to dominate the midfield and following some great passing, Kristian took a shot from just outside the 18 yard box which flew into the top right-hand corner of the goal, making it 1-0 to Welford at half-time.
The second half started with pace and was end to end football offering great viewing for the spectators. Welford centre back Joe came up for a corner, made his presence count and brilliantly slotted the ball into the back of the net to put Welford 2-0 up with 18 minutes to go. Hackleton, though, were not giving up and five minutes later pulled a goal back. With renewed spirits Hackelton continued to put the pressure on and despite some great defending and goal-keeping from Welford, managed to get an equaliser with only 5 minutes left on the clock. The game finished 2-2, and on reflection that was a fair result. Man of the match for Welford was Josh who played left-back.
Thank you to all the parents/carers for making the trek across Northamptonshire with a few of them going out of their way to pick up players along the way. Chris Haines did a great job as Linesman (watch out Robin) and a big thank you to Michael Hart for his help, support and advice as Assistant Manager.
