2023 marks 125 years of football in Welford. We can’t be sure exactly when the club was formed, but this newspaper report of a game played on Boxing Day in 1898 is the earliest record we have, kindly shared with us by the Welford and Sulby Historical Society.
In 1999, a game was played against a team of Leicester City All-Stars to celebrate the centenary of the club. The game, part of a day-long festival of football, helped the club raise £2,400 for Imperial Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation.
As it seems it all began right at the end of 1898, meaning the centenary was marked in 1999, the current committee and managers will have to decide whether to celebrate in 2023, 2024 or both!
