Match action - Vets v Thorplands

WVFC Veterans 4-3 Northampton Thorplands – Club 81 Veterans

January 23, 2022

With Luke Foster acting as stand-in manager for the long-awaited return of Ben Green to the starting line-up after 2 years out with a serious knee injury, Welford were looking to build on some recent promising performances and secure their first league points of the season.

After a shaky start and falling behind to a great finish in the first 5 minutes, Welford battled to regain control of the game. Two quick goals gave Welford the lead, and a third before half time put them 3-1 up at the break.

Early in the second half, Kev (on a perfect hat-trick) was on the wrong end of a bad challenge which resulted in a broken leg. Determined to get a result for the big man, Welford continued to press and a quick counter attack culminated in a brilliant finish (pictured) for our fourth and final goal.

A couple of sloppy goals let the visitors back in but thanks to some good saves and brave defending, Welford came away with a well deserved victory. After a much needed two-week rest, Welford will take on Corby Pegasus next month hoping to build upon this great win.

MOTM was James Bland. When he finally stopped moaning about being asked to play left-back, he actually put in a decent shift. Sure, he didn’t score two goals then break his leg, but – as manager Ben Green commented – he didn’t need to be helped from the pitch, either!
