Welford Victoria Football Club

A squad of 14 travelled to Moulton for the first round of the Boy’s u16s Invitation Cup.  Moulton Magpies are in the league above Welford so the team knew they had to perform.  It did take Welford 15 minutes to get into the game, partly because the pitch was very small.  Moulton took the lead around the 20-minute mark despite some superb defending from Welford.  A few substitutions were made and Welford quickly changed gear.  With the back 4 standing firm, Welford started to pile the pressure on.

Welford’s procession and passing, especially through the midfield were superb. Welford kept the pressure and the team was rewarded with Kristian putting the ball in the back of the net.  It was 1-1 at half-time.

The 2nd half was end-to-end with both teams playing some excellent football.  Moulton piled the pressure on and were denied several chances.  The back 4, led by captain Josh, put their heart and soul into the game; blocking shots and clearing their lines multiple times.  Our goalkeeper had a sensational match, saving some great shots and making sure the ball stuck to his gloves.

It was 1-1 at full-time and as this was a cup match, it went straight to penalties.  This was nail-biting for the players, coaches and parents/carers.

Some of the players just couldn’t watch. The dice were rolled and unfortunately, Welford lost on penalties 8-7.  Despite the loss, the team spirit was amazingly high and the support amongst the players was incredible.

Man of the Match was Joe who played centre-back.  He had a great game, winning just about every ball as well as clearing several shots off the goal line.

Once again a big thank you to Robin for running the line, Michael for his support in making some very tough substitution decisions and all the parents/carers for travelling to Moulton.
